NEWTON, SIR ISAAC (1642–1727) was born in Woolsthorpe, England, and entered Cambridge University in 1661. His genius was soon recognized by Isaac Barrow, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, who resigned his position in 1669 so that Newton could have it. After his graduation in 1665–66, Newton, because of an outbreak of plague in Cambridge, spent an eighteen-month period in Woolsthorpe, perhaps the most productive period ever in the life of a scientist. It was then that he came up with his theory of colors, discovered the elements of both differential and integral calculus, and had crucial insights that led to his theories of gravity and mechanics.
